In the beloved sci-fi movie, The Return of the Jedi, our intrepid heroes land on the Forest Moon of Endor with the goal of knocking out the shield generator that is protection the Death Star II. There they encounter a native species, the Ewoks, who are equal parts cute and savage. They look rather like teddy bears, but they murder and eat Stormtroopers (and almost do the same to our heroes).
Unbeknownst to our heroes, there were other populations of Ewoks. The Ewoks of the north, where the shield generator was located, were widely known to be on the wild and ferocious side. On the south side of the Forest Moon, the Ewoks were more civilized. They had already developed some rudimentary technology, like spectacles and fancy clothes (or ridiculous, you pick). These Ewoks also sometimes grew algae in their hair (kind of like the three-toed sloths of Earth). This gave their hair a distinctive green hue, which eventually became a sign of distinction.
